In 1977, Nobuyoshi Araki – already an established figure in the Japanese creative world - undertook a fake documentary project “starring” a girl he met in real life, whose character moves from the southern island of Kyushu to the bright lights of Tokyo. Her trials and tribulations gave rise to Tokyo Blues, an exhibition of pseudo-documentary photographs exploring the central idea of women as actresses, now published for the first time in book form by Taka Ishii Gallery. Tokyo Blues 1977 is published in a limited edition of 500 copies to coincide with Araki’s exhibition of the same name, in Tokyo’s Roppongi district between 24 August and 21 September, 2013.
